Christmas Driving and Safety
12-11-2013 By Staff

The West Fargo Police Department would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As we know this is the time of year that many travel and we are offering a few driving tips in order to make your holiday travel safe.

  1. Don’t drink and drive.
  2. Always buckle up.
  3. Obey posted speed limits.
  4. Get enough sleep.
  5. Give yourself plenty of time to travel.
  6. Check weather forecast.
  7. Have a 1st aid and winter survival kit available in the vehicle.
  8. Take frequent breaks to remain fresh while driving.
  9. Stay focused and alert while driving.
  10. Make sure your vehicle has been inspected and is suitable for travel.

We also would like to offer some safety tips when decorating your holiday tree, as decorating the Christmas tree can be one of the most joy able times of the year. Around 12,500 people in the United States visit hospital rooms for falls, cuts, shocks and burns related to holiday decorating each year, according to U.S. consumer Product Safety Commission. Christmas trees are involved in about 300 fires annually. This results in an average of 20 deaths, 40 injuries and about $8 million in property damage and loss.

TREES AND DECORATIONS:

  • When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant”. This does not mean the tree won’t catch fire, it does indicate the tree is more resistant to burning.
  • When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green and its needles are hard to pull from branches and do not break when bent between fingers.
  • When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces and radiators.
  • In homes with small children, take special care to avoid sharp or breakable decorations. Keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children and pets who could swallow or inhale small pieces.

LIGHTS:

  • Indoors or outdoors, use only lights that have been tested for safety by a nationally-recognized testing laboratory. Use only newer lights that have thicker wiring and are required to have safety fuses.
  • Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Turn off all holiday lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

If you have any further questions feel free to contact the West Fargo Police Department at (701) 433-5500.
